Why We Teach in the Heat

September 30, 2026•3 min read

People ask us about the heat all the time.

Before their first class: "How hot does it get?" After their first class: "Why does it feel so different?" And after a few weeks of practicing regularly: "I don't think I can go back to non-heated classes."

That last one is the one we hear most. And it's not just people being dramatic.

There's a reason we heat our studios at Love Yoga & Barre in Whitefish and Kalispell. Several reasons, actually. Here's the honest explanation.

Heat Makes Your Body Work Differently

When you exercise in a heated environment, your body responds differently than it does at room temperature - and most of those differences work in your favor.

Your heart rate increases to help manage thermal load, which means your cardiovascular system gets a training effect even during slower, more flexibility-focused classes. Your muscles are warmer and more pliable, which allows for deeper stretching with less injury risk. Your circulation increases, delivering more oxygen to working muscles and clearing metabolic waste more efficiently after exertion.

The result: you get more out of the same amount of time on the mat.

It Builds Mental Toughness Too

There's something that happens in a heated room that doesn't happen at room temperature. At some point in almost every heated class, your brain will tell you it's time to stop. You'll want to step out, lie down, or skip that last sequence.

And then you won't.

You'll find the breath, stay in the room, and move through it. That decision - to stay present when things are uncomfortable - is one of the most transferable skills that yoga can teach. It shows up in how you handle hard conversations, difficult workdays, and moments in life that ask more of you than you feel ready to give.

We heat our studios because we believe in the whole person, not just the physical body.

The Detox Effect Is Real - With One Caveat

You've probably heard that sweating is detoxifying. The truth is a little more specific than that: your liver and kidneys do the heavy lifting when it comes to filtering toxins from your body. Sweat itself is mostly water and salt.

What is real is that sweating heavily in a clean, intentional environment - staying hydrated, breathing deeply, moving your body - supports your lymphatic system, improves circulation, and leaves most people feeling genuinely lighter and cleaner after class.

Just drink your water. Before, during, and after.

Not Every Class Is Heated - And That's Intentional

At Love Yoga & Barre in Whitefish and Kalispell, we offer both heated and non-heated classes. Yin and Restorative yoga happen in a cooler room because deep, passive stretching is actually more effective without the additional thermal stress. Babies & Barre is never heated because we're practicing with new mamas and little ones.

We heat our classes when the heat serves the practice. We don't heat them as a gimmick or a marketing angle. The choice is always in service of what your body can actually do in that environment.

First Time in a Heated Class? Here's What to Know

If you've never practiced in a heated room, here's what helps:

  • Hydrate the day before, not just the morning of

  • Eat lightly 1-2 hours before class

  • Give yourself permission to rest - child's pose is always available and always respected

  • Know that the first few classes are the hardest - heat tolerance builds quickly and most students feel notably different by their third session

  • Bring a towel and a full water bottle - our studios have filtered water on site
